This week sucks.
18. Murder by Numbers – Kaye Morgan
19. Demon Ex Machina – Julie Kenner
20. dot.dead – Keith Raffel
I finally finished Sudoku mystery #2, so I’ll be starting #3 at any moment now. Any moment. #19 is book five in Julie Kenner’s “Demon Hunting Soccer Mom” series, and I need to take a moment to have a spoilerful rant here. I like Stuart. He’s a good guy. But in this book and a little of the last, he has gone down in my estimation so much it’s ridiculous. In the last book, I can understand him. He gets this huge bombshell dropped on him, so he runs away to cool his head and comes back once he’s had time to think about things. Now in this book, once the dust is settled, he does the same damn thing, leaving Kate to agonize for days that their marriage is over before coming back, knowing he’ll be welcomed with open arms. Now, I don’t know about the rest of you, but I feel that once is a fluke, and twice is the beginning of a pattern. From here on out, how many times will he continue to do this? He’s in a position of power over Kate, and dangling his presence over her head is cruel at worst and insulting at best.
Anyway, I’m just grouching about that, psychoanalyzing a fictional character. Sorry, won’t happen again. Maybe.
Uh, #20 was a random library pickup that I ended up reading in a day. I was very surprised. (What on earth did I do that day?) I picked it up because the cover was bright, and I took it home because it was set in Silicon Valley. Lol, I’m biased. I know. 🙂
As I said in the title line, this week indeed sucks. I spent several days running around trying to get the right papers we need to enroll and transfer my brother to different schools, and I cleaned out several garage shelves. I slept through two classes on two different days. And I found out that if I hadn’t failed a 1.5 unit online class last semester, I could have gotten my degree this semester. Dammit.
When was my last post again?
15. His Name is John – Dorien Grey
16. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya – Nagaru Tanigawa
17. Nightlight: A Parody – The Harvard Lampoon
#15 was a rather disappointing procedural mystery about a guy who sees a ghost named John. The ending is criminally anticlimactic, and they even say so. #16 is a reread in preparation for the sequel, which I picked up several months ago and had sitting on the shelf wrapped in its Barnes and Noble shopping bag. The third book should be coming out soonish, as I recall. Not sure when. #17 probably shouldn’t count, as it was a measly 75 pages, but it’s what I read, so there.
Currently working on Haruhi 2 and the second Sudoku Mystery, which I started sometime last year, but left hanging somewhere around part 2. Am vaguely contemplating making a Discworld run, but I think I should finish off some of the shorter series and standalones before I attempt the 30+ book behemoth.
In other news, I’ve spent most of my long weekend playing Cooking Mama. Come tomorrow, I’ll be spending the week playing Ace Attorney Investigations.
Did some math. In order to read 100 books in a year, I should be finishing 8.3 books each month, or about two a week. I’m currently a little ahead, but I’ll try not to get cocky.
Out.
Addendum
14. Grave Secret – Charlaine Harris
Finished this one shortly after midnight last night. I forgot to mention this when I finished Harper 3, but these books have gotten more horrifying and brilliant than I thought possible. Finally, all questions are answered, loose ends tied up, la la la hey! Good books. Now to finish some things left unfinished.
In sadder news, I heard today that one of my old grade school teachers passed away in hospital the other day. I’d learned yesterday that she was sick, and was hoping some of my other classmates and I could arrange a visit over the weekend, but too late. She was a good lady, never in the best of health, so I hope now she’s enjoying all the benefits of Heaven. God bless you, Mrs. L.
