Are titles really necessary now?

55. A Taste of the Nightlife – Sarah Zettel
56. Book Girl and the Suicidal Mime – Mizuki Nomura
57. The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya – Nagaru Tanigawa

At this rate, it’s not looking likely I’ll hit the 100 books goal that I’d set and surpassed last year.  That’s okay.  Quality, not quantity is always nicer.

This time around, it’s a library book and a couple of light novels that I’d been sitting on for several months.  I’m trying to stay away from the library for awhile, so I can get through the stuff that I have lying around.  I’ve been reading less lately, since I’ve gotten back into anime and am watching several of spring and summer’s simulcasts, as well as catching up on older shows too.  Plus, fall semester’s started, and I’ve resolved to actually put in some effort this time around.  I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this here before, but I’m planning to transfer by spring.

In addition to school and hobbies, I’ve also got some freelance sorta work going on, so I’m going to be busy, which is new and different.  I look forward to it.

I don’t want to title this one.

Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at 2:38 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , )

27. Trapped – Michael Northrop
28. Daddy in Training – Michele R. Bardsley
29. Celebrity Sudoku – Kaye Morgan

I’m falling rather behind this year.  Oh noes. 😀  I have an excuse.  I’ve been listening to hours and hours of the ANNCast.  This reignited a passion for anime, so I’ve also been watching streams on ANN and Funimation.  RideBack is badass.

I had rather high hopes for #27.  I was expecting more of a Lord of the Flies or maybe survival horror bent.  I found it rather tame, and the ending was kinda meh.  Oh well.  I guess I’m just more of a cynic when in comes to humans in a crisis.

#28 was another random romance I’ve had on my ereader for months and finally got around to.  Not much to say there.  Quick read.

I’m currently reading a few more mysteries I found at the library, including the latest Sudoku mystery, which, I didn’t know was being written.  There’s also a couple of “first in a new series” things coming up, and a new vampire series, even after I claimed vampire fatigue.  The title was very intriguing.  That’s all.

*7:00pm, edited to add #29, which I finished a bit ago.

Went shopping in Chinatown today

42. The Dead-Tossed Waves – Carrie Ryan
43. Ghost Sudoku – Kaye Morgan

Oh, zombies!  I want it to be Spring 2011 already.  Couple things I realized during this book:  apparently it takes place on the west coast (assuming it’s set in America, which I am still assuming).  For some reason, I’d had the impression it was east coast.  Second, zombies in this ‘verse apparently don’t deteriorate over time if they’re in hibernation, so curbing infection rates and waiting for existing zombies to rot will not workFrightening.

Another sudoku mystery down!  I knew I could do it.  And I love ID-ing the killer before the protag does.  It makes me feel good about myself. (Where are the smilies?  I need an eyeroll here.)

As the title says, most of the family went out shopping today.  Got five or six dozen chasiu bao, and a crapload of comedies from a video store.  We love 4 for $20 DVD sales.  Was very tempted to get Ponyo and Only Yesterday for $8 each, but no.  Sigh.  Really should support the domestic release.  So this evening we watched Marry a Rich Man, starring Sammi Cheng.  Fun movie, very fluffy.

On the anime front, I’m currently about halfway through MoonPhase.  Not really all that into it, but I’ll finish watching it anyway.  I may end up putting on the subs and watching it fast forwarded, though.  I’ve finally ordered part 2 of Ghost Hound, but it’s backordered.  Will take a couple of weeks before it ships, and can’t wait to finish off that wacky series.

39. The Forest of Hands and Teeth – Carrie Ryan

Above is the zombie book I’d been pushing back for several months, and I’m glad I finally got around to reading it.  An excellent example of good “after the end” fiction.  And kudos to Carrie Ryan for writing a zombie book without using the word “zombie” once. 😀  Only thing is, I wished it was longer.  I want to know what happens to everybody!  Now I’m all worried about them.   …And on that thought, I just looked it up, and apparently there are more books coming.  Whew!  I maybe should look this stuff up before I start whining. ^^;

Tonight, the moon was doing that creepy thing it does when it hangs low in the sky and ends up looking huge and yellow.  Scared the crap out of me as I was driving home.  I turned a corner and suddenly it was THERE, looming.

Okay, anybody who knows me knows I’m kindof a sucker for coupons, sales, freakishly good deals and the like.  So recently, when Amazon had a massive anime sale this past month, things went crazy.  My Visa bill hit the kind of high that I usually only see at the beginning of school semesters.  Most everything was upwards of 40% off, and the boxsets, they were a-calling.  I ended up getting Genshiken, Paprika, Tokyo Majin, and Jyu-Oh-Sei for myself, and Pumpkin Scissors for my brother. ($14.99 for PS!  S.A.V.E. discount plus Amazon sale! Holy crap!)  Took me quite a while to finalize the buy list there.  I started out tentatively with Speed Grapher and Mushishi in the cart, and then I discovered Funimation is streaming several series, so I sampled a bit.  I ended up replacing those two titles with TM and JOS.  Maybe in future, but they just didn’t pull me into a “OMG gotta get this now!” kind of place, the way Tokyo Majin (zombies!) and Jyu Oh Sei (fight or die on a hostile alien planet!) did.

Speaking of Funimation streaming things, I recently watched Nerima Daikon Brothers.  This show, it is something to be feared.  Obscenely hilarious, likely offensive, musical AWESOME.  By the way?  We all need to envy voice actor David Devaney Jr., for he is one of perhaps only a handful of people on earth who has “Flying Butt-Plug” on his resume.

Just finished one more…

12. An Ice Cold Grave – Charlaine Harris
13. The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Gothgirl – Barry Lyga

Finished Harper Connelly 3, above, and just minutes ago finished Fanboy + Gothgirl.  About two-fifths the way through Harper 4, then I’ve got a few more young adult books lined up.  I also might be going back to find Barry Lyga’s other books because apparently they all tie together somewhat, and I’m such a completist dork.

The other night I finished watching the first season of Mahoromatic.  This wasn’t from Suncoast, it’s something my dad got.  I’d heard of it, but it’s not my usual kind of show (ecchi, fanservicey), so I hadn’t been too interested, but it’s not bad.  The teacher is seriously messed up, though.

Caught up in Fables.  I loved the Witches storyarc, and I note that so many previously underrated characters are getting their crowning moments of awesome.  I’m lovin it.

WHY WHY

Thursday, January 28, 2010 at 7:28 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , )

8. Drag Strip – Nancy Bartholomew
9. Film Strip – Nancy Bartholomew
10. Geektastic: Stories from the Nerd Herd – Anthology
11. Strip Poker – Nancy Bartholomew

So, finished off the Sierra Lavotini series.  Last book ends by opening up some juicy new plot threads, then I go online and learn that the publisher doesn’t want to continue the series, which is not to say that the author feels the same.  If she had her way, she’d definitely continue, which is something, at least.  Ugh.

Geektastic is an anthology of nerdy stories for young adults.  Twas a Christmas present from one of my very best friends (Luff you!), so it was started in December and finished the other day.  I so enjoyed it, and I think there’s a wide enough variety of stories that most any geek would enjoy it too.

I finished this batch a little later than I expected, in part due to the semester starting and me having to get to sleep at a reasonable hour (I do my best reading in the middle of the night), but also largely due to me finishing off watching Red Garden and catching up on Fables.  Nothing like anime and comics to recharge after all the paper-cut making prose books.  That’s right.  Last week I got about six papercuts in two days.

Next on the agenda are the last two Harper Connelly books, but there’s a twist.  My web design 2 project is going to be sort of an encyclopedia site for those books, so I expect to be reading and rereading these all semester.  Also, the young adult section of my library finally reopened after remodeling, so I’ve picked up a couple of books that I may end up reading first.  Who knows.

I’ve also got about a dozen more chapters of Fables and the entirety of Jack of Fables to catch up on, and a few new DVD sets of anime to watch.  A Suncoast near us has been having a massive liquidating sale, so everything was 50% or more off.

Going to be busy busy busy!

Bored now.

Monday, September 22, 2008 at 11:02 am (Uncategorized) (, )

Omg guys, how are youuu?  Now, I never meant for this particular journal to be a haven for my whiny tiemz, but I just have to say that dang, my boobs are really sore right now.  I guess my period’s coming up soon.

I’m currently sneaking in journal time during my Photoshop class, because most of the students have never seen computers before, and need much walking through.  That’s a bit of an exaggeration, but not by much.  Thus, I spend much of my classtime waiting to move ahead.

I meant to have another volume or two of scans out by now, but classes have been keeping me busy.  Just today, we peformed skits in Speech class, and it went very well.  We were a hit. 😀  Tomorrow there’s a field trip for geology, but I’m not sure I want to go.  Long story.

Anyway, what I meant to say was, sooner or later, I want to finish up releasing the volumes my online ebook library has made available to me.  In my queue are the first volumes of Joan, Kazan, and a few others that escape me at the moment.

In other, more personal anime news, I finally started making headway on the 20-some gigs of anime on my harddisc that I have yet to watch.  I finally finished watching Samurai Champloo, and it was great.  Very sweet, and kinda sad at the end.  Episode 23, with the baseball crack, was definitely my favorite, though.

Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 11:27 pm (Uncategorized) ()

Heh heh heh, days like this, I wonder how there can be anyone on earth who can put up with me for long.

In other news, I now have a license to kill drive, and buggere alle this for a larke, I might as well go back to lj.  Myspace doesn’t have nearly enough coding options.  Nevermind, I figured it out.  Stupid html.  Being the same as it was back when I learned it, and not having changed when I expected it to…  Why do we need BBC code when it’s basically the same as html? *whinewhinewhineIknowit’sprobablynotreallythesamebutstill*

A couple of the latest obsessions:

2×2=Shinobuden (AKA Ninja Nonsense) remains one of the funniest shows I have ever seen, despite the often crude humor.
Hana Yori Dango (the 2005 live action series) is just as wildly entertaining as the manga, maybe even more so because of the scary Harry Potter-esque music that starts playing whenever something ominous is about to happen.
Scrubs: My Musical (season 6, episode 6) prompted me to do terrible, terrible things, and I now play the episode on loop.  Often.
Shin Petshop of Horrors has been licensed!  Huzzah!  Look forward to its release in February 2008.  *dancedance*
After School Nightmare is something that I’ve been avoiding reading, but now that I finally have delved into the weird, I’m so glad I have.  I admit that one of the reasons I stayed away is because of Setona Mizushiro’s art, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that she has much improved since X-Day and Diamond Head and a handful of other short series and one-shots (I mean, they were good stories  but they were just HORRIBLE to look at!)

My hand’s starting to hurt a bit, so I guess that’s all for today.  I had meant to start reworking that portrait, too.

Wheeee

Thursday, June 7, 2007 at 10:31 pm (Uncategorized) ()

Nothing much to say, other than I’m still alive.  Fanime was full of win.  I got lots of free stuff.  Always a plus. 😛

Hmm….I failed my first behind-the-wheel test last week.  I’ve got another one scheduled for Monday.

I assembled lasagna the other day.  My brother said it didn’t have enough cheese, but you know, my intestines thought it had plenty of cheese.

I finally started reading Hana Yori Dango, and I must say it is engrossing.  I’m seventeen or eighteen volumes in, and still very much interested.  I mean, I got sick of Ranma 1/2 after only twelve volumes.

Looking forward to AX, as well.  The film schedule was released, and I suppose this is finally my chance to see Tokyo Godfathers.  I might go see Death Note TLN again, if I am so inclined.  I saw it at Fanime, but it was just that awesome.  I thought I would be upset about the changes they made to the storyline, but I found that I enjoyed not knowing exactly what was going to happen next.  Sadly, future viewings may never hold the same thrill as that first one did.  Such is the nature of the suspense thriller genre.

Which reminds me: go find out if Uzumaki is available in North America.  And heck, pick up Train Man already.  Borders should have it by now.

CW 035 – ENDGAME

Wednesday, May 30, 2007 at 4:14 pm (CW1) ()

035 05-24-07

I just lugged two ill-begotten textbooks up a hill and two flights of stairs.  I am now even more eager to be rid of them for good.

I don’t think I really have to do anything today, but I’d like to close up this semester of creative writing by saying, w00t.  It’s done, for now.  No more typing for an hour and a half with nails that I haven’t trimmed in three weeks. (A personal record, and the longest I’ve ever gone without cutting them.  It’s driving me insane.)

Fanime officially starts tomorrow, but tonight we’re picking up our pre-reg badges, and I want to check out the swap meet.  Looking for bargains, of course.  Still can’t figure out where we’re supposed to be picking up our badges, though.  I assume there will be signs or directions of some sort, and if not, we can just follow everyone else who’s going to pick up badges.

Otherwise, I have nothing more to say to the likes of you.  People.

What the heck, it’s 8:30 on the day of the final and the teacher’s not here.
